The Benefits of Directory Submissions

Web directories are directories on the Internet that provide links to other websites. It is not a search engine where keywords are searched. The websites are listed by categories and subcategories. The category is based on the whole content of the website and only categorized in one or two categories most of the time. A lot of directories allow users to submit their websites, but some of them have editors to check on your content.

There are three main classifications of web directories:

!. Free directories. These directories  provide services that you can use to post your sites for free on these types of directories. The quality or the editorial control varies from site to site wherein some free directories almost accept every submission of websites. The reputation of these sites is not good and search engines do not trust its content.

2. Paid directories. The main difference of course is that it is paid and you have editorial right over your headline. The reputation of paid directories vary due to varying control of editorial content. But search engines usually trust the content of paid directories.

3. Reciprocal directories. These directories allow users like you to provide the directory with a link of there own to your website. These should be avoided since you have a link on your site that potentially points to your competitors. Some examples of directories are the Yahoo! Directories and the Open Directory Project (OPD).

It is beneficial to use directories especially if you want to draw traffic to your site. Directory submissions can be very helpful for promoting your site or selling some products. It is one of the techniques involved in search engine optimization (SEO).

The greatest benefit you will have when you submit your website is that you might get a higher ranking from search engines. There are many factors that affect this, but one of the factors are links to other sites. The page rank is directly proportional to the number of links. It follows that if you have more link backs to your site, the higher your rankings will be. The higher the ranking, the higher you are placed during searches of the search engine.

When the search engines send out spiders to the links found in directories, they will also send one out to you. With this, there is a big chance that you will be automatically indexed on their site. Thus, you have a better chance of being indexed automatically when there are new search engines that will follow the same procedures in the future.

Believe it or not, there are people who actually browse through these directories to find what they are looking for. The main advantage these directories provide users is that it is organized by categories and subcategories. It will be easier for users to search what they want. With this, there is a better chance with the right title and description since they will be attracted to your site.
